Scope
I designed this instructional guide specifically for 5th-grade Social Studies and Language Arts students. It serves as a comprehensive roadmap for a research unit on Ancient Egypt, intentionally bridging the gap between classroom curriculum requirements and the development of library information literacy skills.
Summary
My goal with the Awesome Ancient Egypt pathfinder was to go beyond a simple resource list and create a true tool for inquiry. I structured the guide to lead students through the complete research process, starting with deciphering library metadata (such as “RDA Clues” and “Super Subject Headings”) before progressing to locating physical and digital materials. I included curated non-fiction and fiction titles, database links, and a specific “Working Together” section to outline how I collaborate with the classroom teacher to meet Common Core standards.
Rationale for Standards Placement
- AASL (Standards 2 & 3): I selected this project for these standards to demonstrate my dual role as an instructional partner (collaborating with teachers) and an information specialist (teaching students how to find information, rather than just pointing to where it is).
